Dynamic compaction is a ground improvement technique used to increase the density and stability of loose or weak soils, primarily granular soils such as sands and gravels. This method enhances the soil’s load-bearing capacity and reduces settlement potential, which is particularly useful in areas where the ground needs to support heavy structures or infrastructure.

Dynamic compaction is one of the oldest soil improvement methods known, reportedly used by the Romans prior to 100 ad and in the United States as early as the 1800s (Welsh, 1986).
